Congratulations to Anthony Kryl, coach of the Westhampton Beach robotics team, who won the Coach of the Year award and will be a coach finalist at the national competition held in St. Louis at the end of April. Coach Kryl led the Westhampton Beach team to winning the Creativity Award along with the Southold “sister” team that won the engineering award. The Southold team will be competing in St. Louis.Congratulations also go out to former Hurricane Kristen Polan, who now attends SUNY Oneonta. Kristen was one of 29 scholar athletes inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society on April 7. To qualify for induction, Kristen maintained a grade point average of 3.4 or better and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. Kristen is majoring in fashion and textiles and is a member of the volleyball team. Nice job, Kristen.

The Civil Air Patrol’s 9th Suffolk Cadet Squadron will be hosting an open house from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, at Gabreski Air National Guard Base, 150 Old Country Road in Westhampton Beach. The free event is for patriots 12 years of age and older who might be interested in joining or are curious to see what the volunteer organization has to offer. Our local firefighters are always on top of the latest trainings and here’s another that might be of interest: The Flying Point Foundation for Autism will be hosting an Autism Awareness for First Responders on Saturday, April 16, at Hampton Bays Middle School. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and three non-core CME credits are available through the Suffolk County Department of Emergency Services. This seminar has been sponsored the last several years by the foundation and Southampton Hospital to coincide with Autism Awareness Month each April. The Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce will host its next networking dinner on Wednesday, April 20, at Baby Moon Restaurant. The Beach United Methodist Church will host a Paint Night Party fundraising event from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, at Buoy One Restaurant. The cost for this event is $40 and all painting supplies (canvas, paint, brushes, smocks, etc.) will be provided. By the end of the evening you will have a beautiful painting to take home and display. Food and drinks are not included, but may be ordered separately. There is only a month until the Westhampton Beach Farmers Market opens for the 2016 season on Saturday, May 7. If you are interested in having a spot to sell your wares, go to westhamptonchamber.org and fill out an application. I’m sure spaces are filing up quick, since it is one of the best farmers markets around.
Also on May 7 and 8 will be the Westhampton Beach Spring Sidewalk Sale. Vendors around the village will bring some of their merchandise out of their stores and onto the sidewalks at discounted prices. Make sure you wander around and check them out.
The Moriches Paquatuck Squaws over at Camp Paquatuck will host a fundraising cycling event called The Inlet Ride on Saturday, May 7. The 28-mile round-trip bicycle ride will take place on Dune Road and will start and end at Cupsogue Beach and the midway point will be the Shinnecock Inlet. The cost to register is $25 and riders will start assembling at 8 a.m. Refreshments will be provided along the way and prizes will be awarded to the top three riders who bring in the most donations. Human Understanding and Growth Seminars will host its 14th annual Spring Fling bowling fundraiser on Saturday, May 21, at Wildwood Lanes in Northampton.
