I knew it was going to be an interesting weekend when a “streaker” ran onto the field and grabbed the football resting at the line of scrimmage during Friday night’s Westhampton Beach football game. The streaker was almost immediately confronted by an East Hampton player and, after a quick facemask and shake to get loose, took off north into the darkness. I was told that this was the first time that something like this has ever happened during a Hurricanes’ football game.
On Saturday, Retta and I headed into the city to visit my old high school—Riverdale Country School—for my 20th reunion. We caught the Falcons football team in action and got to see how much my old campus had changed over the years. That night I met up with some of my former classmates and we reminisced about our high school years. It was great to see everyone and we all hoped it wouldn’t be another 20 years before our next reunion.
On Sunday, during a ride to the store, we passed Ziggy Marley and his band members hanging on the corner of Sunset Avenue and Main Street before their performance at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. I rolled down my window and wished for them to have a good show; in response, a few waved while others flashed us the peace sign. Later, I gave Retta a hard time, saying: “You could have had a photo of you with Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers to go along with your picture of you with Keb’ Mo’, but no, you said it was too chilly to walk.”
To round out my weekend, one of my sources in the village sent me a text around 9 p.m. on Sunday about a car driving into Country Heroes on Montauk Highway. I took a ride over and, sure enough, there it was, a Lexus sedan that had crashed into the front door and window of the building. I would like to wish Don Lipari, and his staff at Country Heroes, a speedy recovery and will stop down for my favorite, a Grand Canyon, as soon as they reopen. I urge everyone to do the same and support this local business.
