Congratulations and bon voyage to Montana Ryzuk, who is currently a student at Siena College, but is studying abroad this semester in England. I always thought every college student should spend one semester abroad to see the world and learn a new culture. Good for you Montana, enjoy your life experience. As most of you of the Christian faith know, October 4 is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron of ecology and animals. On Sunday, October 2, two local churches will hold blessing services for your pets. The Church of the Immaculate Conception on Quiogue will hold its service at 3 p.m. by the statue of St. Francis in the church parking lot. St. Mark’s Church will host its blessing of the pets also on Sunday, October 2, at 4:30 p.m. on the front steps of the church on Main Street and Potunk Lane. For more information, please contact the churches.

The Westhampton Free library will host “From Pumpkin to Jack-o-lantern” on Saturday, October 1. from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Get your Halloween pumpkin carving started early this year with help from the library’s tips and ideas about carving those round orange gourds. They will even provide the pumpkins to carve, just make sure you dress for a messy afternoon. I’m sure you could even bring your own pumpkin. I prefer the synthetic ones that last forever. But if you go the natural route, here’s a tip of my own: a little petroleum jelly smothered around can keep it from drying out or, if you didn’t take any precautions, you can soak your masterpiece in a bucket of water to bring it back to life.

The library will also host a bus trip to New York City on Wednesday, October 5. The bus will depart the municipal parking lot on Parlato Drive at 9 a.m. and drop folks off at the New York Public Library on 42nd Street and 5th Avenue. The bus will make the reverse trip leaving Manhattan at 6 p.m. Registration is $25. For more information and more events check out the library’s website, www.WesthampotnLibrary.net.

Next Saturday, October 8, the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Westhampton Beach will host the second annual Harvest Festival on Main Street. Most of Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event and there will be all types of activities for folks of all ages to enjoy.

On the same day, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Westhampton will host the fifth annual Oyster Festival down at the Village Marina, Library Avenue and Stevens Lane from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. There are many activities and events going on throughout the afternoon. You can check out a schedule of events at WHBoysterFest.com.

And also next weekend is the Gordon Werner Arts and Crafts show on the Village Green on Saturday, October 8, and Sunday, October 9, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. More than 65 artists and craftspeople will exhibit their pieces of fine art, sculpture, stained and blown glass, jewelry, fiber, wood, clay, metal work, photography and more.

The Live Your Cor Foundation will host its annual fundraising cocktail party on Saturday, October 8, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Westhampton Country Club. This event will help raise money for the Cory Hubbard Memorial Scholarship and the Live Your Cor Foundation. Tickets are $100 and may be purchased by calling 631-288-2527 or by stopping by Lynne’s Cards and Gifts, Unique Boutique or Hampton Properties, all on Main Street here in Westhampton Beach, or at Flowers by Rori, in Quogue.
