The No. 5-seeded Westhampton Beach boys tennis team exited the Suffolk County team tournament with a 5-1 loss to No. 4 Half Hollow Hills East in the quarterfinals last Thursday.
Lone senior Gavin Vander Schaaf, who also lost to Miller Place’s Landon Agic in the first round of the individual singles tournament, 6-2, 4-6, 5-7, the following day, said he wouldn’t want to go out with any other group.
“Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better team my last season,” he said. “I know we always come out fighting, and that’s all I could ask for. The whole team is great, and has a lot of heart.”
Junior Theo Grellet-Aumont also made a Suffolk County tournament appearance, falling, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round to Commack’s Eric Benderly. On the doubles side, the freshmen team of Zach Berger and Bryce Broth also exited early, while junior Bobby Stabile and sophomore Giancarlo Volpe made it to the finals, results of which were not available by press time.
“Of course, we all like to win, but I have always said that I play tennis because I like it, not just to win,” Vander Schaaf said, “and being on a team with these guys has really solidified that for me.”
