Westhampton Fire Broke Out in Stand of 'Dwarf Pines' Especially Ripe for Fast-Moving Wildfires

The dwarf pines prevalent in the area of the Pine Barrens that caught fire over the weekend make it much easier for a brush fire to spread quickly than in a pitch pine forest that makes up the bulk of the Pine Barrens. Polly Weigand, an ecologist with the nonprofit Forest Stewards Guild, said that Saturday's fire was a necessary event for the Dwarf Pine Plains that surround Gabreski Airport in Westhampton and that fires would naturally be expected to occur every 10 to 20 years. The area did not burn during the 1995 Sunrise Fire. MICHAEL WRIGHT

SCWA To Receive Settlement From 3M Company in 'Forever Chemical' Lawsuit

The Suffolk County Water Authority has announced that it would receive its first payment as part of a nationwide class-action lawsuit against the 3M Company, a manufacturer of PFAS, which are often referred to as “forever chemicals,” because they do not break down over time. The chemicals have polluted Long Island’s sole-source aquifer, and SCWA will receive part of a $10.5 billion settlement involving thousands of water providers across the country. SCWA expects an initial payment of $34 million, about 20 percent of the $170 million it will receive in total from the settlement.
