Westhampton Woman Dies After Being Pinned By Own Car

A real estate agent from Westhampton, fondly remembered by family and friends as caring and compassionate, was found dead Saturday evening outside a home in Center Moriches that she was getting ready to list, and authorities think she was run over by her own car that she had left in gear and running.Suffolk County Police said 50-year-old Jennifer Feuerman, a longtime employee of Norma Reynolds Sotheby’s International Realty in Westhampton Beach, exited her 2012 Mercedes-Benz outside a home on Bowditch Lane at some point on Saturday while it was still running and that the vehicle backed over her, pinning her under the driver’s side door.Responding police officers found Ms. Feuerman after 7 p.m. and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Suffolk Police have declined to speculate when the accident could have taken place, but noted that a neighbor called 911 at around 7:10 p.m. that evening and told authorities that it looked like someone was trapped under the vehicle.Police do not know how long Ms. Feuerman was at the house.Representatives at Sotheby’s said this week that they did not know why Ms. Feuerman was at the house on Saturday evening, though they did confirm that she was preparing to show it in the near future and believe she might have stopped in to check on something.Suffolk Police, who are still investigating the death, impounded the Mercedes-Benz for a routine safety check; the results of that inspection were not released as of earlier this week.Ms. Feuerman lived in Westhampton with her husband, Joseph, and their son, Nicholas, who is 19. She also had close family and friends in the community.“Jen was always outgoing, always smiling and always willing to help anyone who needed a hand,” Carolyn Cahn, Ms. Feuerman’s sister-in-law, said on Tuesday. Jackie Doskoez, a longtime friend of Ms. Feuerman who also works at the real estate agency, said all of those at the office are deeply saddened by the loss of their friend.“We’re a really small company, so the agents here are more like family,” Ms. Doskoez said. “She was a very caring, helpful person that we miss already. She was a big part of our family.”Ms. Doskoez said Ms. Feuerman was the type of person who would surprise friends with thoughtful gifts, and was known for her selfless acts, such as bringing soup to the office for a sick coworker.“She always made sure I felt like I was taken care of, that I spent time with my family and remembered to call my mom,” Ms. Doskoez said. “She was such a thoughtful, caring woman.”Ms. Feuerman was the second member of her family to work at the company and learned her skills from her mother, Marie Tufo, who died in 2012. Ms. Feuerman specialized in historic, vacation and waterfront properties during her tenure with the agency.Services for Ms. Feuerman are scheduled for today, Thursday, January 8, from 2 until 4 p.m. and from 7 until 9 p.m., at the Follett and Werner Funeral Home on Mill Road in Westhampton Beach. A wake was also held on Wednesday evening.A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 9, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Main Street on Quiogue. A private cremation will follow.In addition to her husband and son, Ms. Feuerman is survived by four brothers, Guy Tufo and his wife Susan, Vincent Tufo and his wife Deborah, Christopher Tufo and his wife Hedy, and Stephen Tufo and his wife Sheryl, and a sister, Elisa Carr and her husband Michael. She also leaves behind her mother-in-law, Palma Feuerman, her sister-in-law, Carolyn Cahn and her husband Seth, her sister-in-law, Mary Allen and her husband Jerry, and many nieces and nephews.
