The Westhampton Yacht Squadron hosted the second weekend of its summer series to near-perfect sailing conditions this past Saturday, July 24.

Flying scots, sunfish and the historic SS class all took to the waters of Moriches Bay to light and variable winds, each getting in three races on the day.

Alex Wilcenski, Laurel Wilcenski and Brady Schultz won the flying scot fleet on Saturday, winning two of the three races, but trail Luke Hickling, Nick Purpura and Sue Jenkins in the overall standings. Dave Kisla, Kirstin Naase and Paul Creedon, who placed third on both weekends, are third overall with three more weekends in August to go to finish the series.

Jen Truscott once again took first place in the sunfish races and leads the fleet after the first two weeks. Suzanne Hulme took second place on Saturday, followed by Steve Smetana, but it’s Smetana and Cynthia Roney who are second and third in the sunfish overall, so far.

The SS Class is believed to be the oldest one design racing sail boat in the world, and the SS Class Association Championship rotates between Shinnecock Yacht Club in Quogue and Westhampton Yacht Squadron each year. The SS Class Championships was one of the few local regattas to be sailed last year even during the pandemic — it’s been competed annually since World War II.

Robert Dudley and James Ewing repeated as champions of this year’s regatta. The pair won two of the three races. John Sartorius and Peter Schellbach placed second while Denise Dalmasse and Deb Dalmasse placed third.

The Westhampton Yacht Squadron will host the third part of its summer series on August 14, but has a busy week prior to that, hosting a bevy of Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association races. The Midget Championships are August 5, followed by the GSBYRA Junior Regatta August 6, the Fenner Bowl and GSBYRA Invitational August 7 and the Morgan Trophy August 8.

The SS Class will be back in action at Shinnecock Yacht Club August 14 for the Horton Trophy.
