The 20-knot winds presented a challenge for Westhampton Yacht Squadron’s sailors during this weekend’s Fenner Cup and the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association Sunfish Invitational on Saturday, August 7.

The Flying Scot and sunfish sailors each competed in five races on the Moriches Bay course. The Sunfish Invitational featured 10 sailors from the Yacht Squadron, and the Fenner Cup Championship featured four teams of three sailors.

Mike Disario, Steve Keller and Matt Roden won three out of five of the Fenner Cup races, finishing in second in the other two, earning five points and capturing the Fenner Championship Bowl. Alex Wilcenski, Sue Jenkins and Wally Dawydiak came in just behind them, finishing with six points after winning two races and placing second in the three remaining races.

Yacht Squadron Sailing Director Dave Kisla and his teammates Paul Creedon and Jim Schultz came in third in all five races, for a total of 12 points. The final team, Halsey Surgan, Ed Surgan and Sandy Surgan, came in fourth in four of the races, and failed to finish the final race, for a total of 16 points.

In the Sunfish Invitational, Griffin Sisk won all but one of the five races, earning him four points. Jen Truscott, who leads the Yacht Squadron summer series standings in sunfish racing, won a race and placed second in three others to slide in second behind Sisk in the Invitational and hold the top spot in the summer series standings.

Suzanne Hulme finished third in the Invitational, keeping her second place position in the summer series. Steve Smetana placed sixth in the invitational to hold his third place position.

The club that accumulates the greatest number of points in the six individual regattas during the summer is awarded the President’s Trophy at the end of the season. This year’s standings will be revealed at the end of the season.

Yacht Squadron sailors have three more sailing days to try to capture the President’s Trophy. The next invitational race is next Saturday, August 14.
