The Westhampton Yacht Squadron is no stranger to hosting national events, it does so nearly every summer. But this weekend, the Remsenburg club hosted one that had a little more meaning to Commodore Sundy Shermeyer.

The yacht squadron hosted the Flying Scot Women’s North American Championship, and while the sailing occurred on Saturday, it was really a three-day event for the club. Shermeyer was happy with how it all went.

“While we provide a wide range of activities for our members at the Westhampton Yacht Squadron, sailing is really our mission,” she said. “Serving as the 55th and third woman commodore, I am quite proud of our club hosting a national event that celebrated women in sailing by bringing the WNAC Women’s North American Championship to the Westhampton Yacht Squadron. There were many activities taking place over the weekend, including an amazing welcome dinner, watching talented women sailors competing out on Moriches Bay and a finale with Sunday’s awards luncheon.

“Becoming the host club was a huge undertaking, applying years in advance and requiring much planning, but with Jen Truscott [as] regatta chair, Jim Schultz [as] sailing director and Dave Kisla [as] fleet captain, working with over 100 member volunteers pitching in, it was truly a spectacular weekend of sailing, one we won’t ever forget!”

There was a fleet of nine boats out on the water on Saturday and they all competed in three races. It was a mix of local sailors and those who came in from out of state, many, if not all, were hosted by members of the yacht squadron.

Carol and Nancy Claypool and Carrie Berger of Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans and Lake Norman Yacht Club in North Carolina where the champions after a slim 5-6 victory over Sally Morriss, Sherrie Galaway and Donna Graham of Birmingham Sailing Club in Alabama and Corinthian Yacht Club in Massachusetts. The Claypools and Berger placed second in the first and third races of the day and won the second race which netted them the overall victory. Morriss, Galaway and Graham won the first race of the day but then placed second and third, respectively.

A crew of local sailors out of the yacht squadron, Jennifer Truscott, Sue Jenkins and Laurel Wilceski tied Regina Soto, Christine Coffill and Suzanne McConnel of Moriches Yacht Club with 12 points apiece. Truscott, Jenkins and Wilceski were awarded third on typical tiebreaking rules. Lynn Simpson, Marissa E. Avila and Kirstin Naase of Lake Canyon Yacht Club out of Texas and Westhampton Yacht Squadron rounded out the top five boats with 13 points.
