William A. Nygard
William Adolf Nygard of Morristown died on Wednesday, May 2, at the cardiac unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. He was 78.
Born on January 12, 1934, in The Bronx, he was the only son of Gustav and Edith Nygard. He married Carol R. Koch, also of The Bronx, on February 13, 1954, and they lived in Morristown, spending winters in St. Petersburg, Florida.
He was a vocational student at Samuel Gompers Vocational-Technical High School, serving as class president and graduating in 1951. His two years of U.S. Army service began on November 1, 1954.
After his military service, he worked as foreman for the Long Island Lighting Company for 18 years. He was also an independent marine mechanic, primarily at Jackson’s Marina in Hampton Bays. The latter decades of his career were as a vocational instructor with the Board of Cooperative Education Services. A dedicated vocational teacher, he was an active member in the teacher’s union in both leadership and negotiations roles.
Recreational pursuits included serving as commodore of the Riverhead Club, numerous boating activities including an annual trip to Block Island with his buddies aboard the Maidstone. In later years he enjoyed collecting recipes, cooking and jumble puzzles.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Carol R. Nygard; three sons, William H. Nygard of Pillar Point, Larry E. Nygard of Southampton, and Eric P. Nygard and his wife Diana of Hampton Bays; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two nieces and one nephew.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Claxton Hepburn Foundation. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Costello Funeral Service in Alexandria Bay.
