William Cooper Sr., known as Bill, of Westhampton Beach died at his home on January 12. He was 76.

Born on December 27, 1939, in the Bronx to Thomas Sr. and Mary (Deery) Cooper, he attended St. Barnabas Grammar School and Cardinal Hayes High School. After graduating, he served as a reservist in the Air National Guard and went into Local #3 Elevator Division, from which he later retired. While he was working he divided his time between his home in the Hell’s Kitchen section of Manhattan and his summer home in Westhampton Beach.

Upon retiring he moved full time to Westhampton Beach. During those years he enjoyed tinkering and fixing things around the house, going out for dinners, enjoying home cooked meals with friends and never missing an episode of Law & Order, a Yankees game or the movie “Top Gun” when on television.

Mr. Cooper was predeceased by his long term companion Jean Dunn on January 7. He is survived by his three children Kimberly Roe and husband Colin of Westhampton, Denise Curran and husband Brian Curran of East Quogue and William Jr. of Queens; his former wife, Carole Cooper; two grandchildren, Jennifer Curran and Jessica Curran; a brother Thomas Cooper and wife Renee of Florida; and niece Maureen Cooper and nephews Thomas Cooper and David Cooper.

Pity the poor horseshoe crab. It is, without question, a survivor almost beyond compare. Consider this: There are fossils of the creature dating back 445 million years. Dinosaurs arrived about 200 million to 250 million years ago — which means the time between us and dinosaurs is equal to the time between dinosaurs and the earliest horseshoe crabs. And they’re still here, nearly unchanged. But they finally may have met their match. The American horseshoe crab has “vulnerable” status, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The population faces a whole series of challenges, including sea-level rise, coupled ... by Editorial Board
