Longtime Southampton resident William N. Wickliffe died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his daughters, on June 30. He was 71.
Born on April 26, 1937, in New York City, he and his family enjoyed summers on Big Fresh Pond. He and his wife, Susan, who predeceased him, moved from Seaford and became full-time residents in 1987.
He was a retired lieutenant of the New York Police Department and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his children, Laura and Joseph Hughes, Deborah Wickliffe and Allison Wickliffe; a sister, Joan and her husband Eric Veiler; and two grandchildren, Kelsey and Connor.
Survivors recalled this week that Mr. Wickliffe was a greatly respected and active member of the Southampton Kiwanis as well as the Lake Missapogue Association. They described him as the “go-to guy” for guidance and advice, noting that he naturally gave his heart along with his incredible smile and hearty laugh. Survivors said that he cherished his family and friends and spent many happy hours with them, whether fishing on Peconic Bay, cooking up fine meals on the barbecue, or sharing good conversation.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 3, with full police and Navy honors, followed by a reception at the family home.
