Winifred Ann Cardo (née Raynor) of Quogue died peacefully on August 9. She was 96.

She was born on December 4, 1927, to Catherine and Kenneth Raynor.

Her life was well-lived, and because of that, she was well-loved, her family said, noting that she counted herself blessed to be married for 71 years to the love of her life, Carl Cardo.

The couple resided in Quogue, where they raised their children and worked the family business. She was the bookkeeper for Charles Cardo & Son, and later worked in real estate for her longtime friend, Jean, at Jean Carbone Real Estate.

She will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who touched the lives of many. She once said that the happiest years of her life were raising her two boys. She put a priority on her family and was fully present in all she did, according to her family.

Summers were spent at the beach, at the Surf Club, where tremendous bonds of friendships were formed among families of all generations.

She also had a great sense of adventure and is the one who got the family into skiing. They shared a ski house with four other families (Carbone, Hurley, Mack and McChesney) at Okemo Mountain, in Ludlow, Vermont.

She and her husband enjoyed vacationing in the islands and especially going on cruises. In later years, after her husband retired, the couple spent their winters in Florida. They bought a condo in a golfing community, “Meadowood,” in Ft. Pierce, where they spent 25 years and built many friendships.

She will be remembered for her beautiful and fun-loving spirit, great sense of humor and terrific resilience, her family said, noting that she was a true friend, kind and generous. The key to her happiness was a gratitude she carried in her heart for her family and friends. She was a child of the Great Depression and never forgot what real need was. She lived a comfortable life and appreciated what she had.

She is survived by her husband Carl; her son and daughter in-law, Randy and Beverley Cardo of Quogue: her granddaughter and husband, Kristin and Dillon Bock; her great-grandchildren, Winnie and Beau Bock of Nashville; her granddaughter, Ayla Cardo of The Dalles, Oregon; and her beloved caregiver, Bobbie Betts, of Westhampton Beach. She was predeceased by her son, Charles Cardo (Chuck); and four sisters, Catherine Bishop, Margery Schunk, Elizabeth Barnish and Barbara Andrews.

She was laid to rest on August 14 at the Quogue Cemetery.

SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE — Matthew Kopoulos, 34, of East Hampton was arrested by Village Police on December 2 and charged with petit larceny and unlawfully fleeing an officer, both misdemeanors, stemming from a September 25 incident in which police say Kopoulos stole items from the 7-Eleven on North Sea Road and then fled the scene on an e-bike. When a Village Police officer attempted to stop him he sped away and drove onto the Shinnecock Territory. Love in Action

On behalf of the Hamptons United Methodist Church, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors and dedicated volunteers who made this year’s free community Thanksgiving dinner a remarkable success. Because of your kindness, we were able to serve nearly 500 of our neighbors — families, seniors, workers and individuals from all walks of life — by providing a holiday meal for their table. For the sixth year in a row, we are also deeply indebted to our fearless leader, Denise Smith-Meacham. A Day of Quiet

November 27, Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. Morning: I hear the screech owl, the great-horned owl, the Cooper’s hawk, Carolina wren, white-throated sparrow, chirps of the cardinal, red-breasted nuthatch, the cooo of the mourning dove; songs of rooster, flicker, dark-eyed junco. Titmouse, blue jay. Wind, barely a breeze, whispers haaaaaaaa in wind language, lovingly. Tranquility. Peace. I’m alive — ping of chill in the air, my skin zings. This sacred silence is why I moved here 40 years ago. But it’s completely gone now. And why? Was our designation of “green community” just a photo-op? A lie? Words co-opted like the phrase ... by Staff Writer
