Renovations are continuing on the interior of the Quogue Country Market, though at a slower pace than anticipated, meaning that the newest owner will likely not open by the Fourth of July as previously planned.

Quogue Mayor Peter Sartorius said this week that contractors have been working on fixing the inside of the Jessup Avenue market, located just down the road from Village Hall.

“There is work being done,” Mr. Sartorius said. “I would admit the pace has not been breathtaking.”

Mr. Sartorius noted that William Nowak, the village’s building inspector, was scheduled to inspect the building again on Wednesday, June 22, to make sure the new plumbing meets the code. Once that is completed, workers can begin pouring concrete for the new floor, the mayor said.

Reggie Sethi of Farmingville, who bought the business in January, did not respond to multiple calls seeking comment this week.

In an early May interview, Mr. Sethi said the building was “falling apart,” noting that roof and interior repairs were needed, as well as a new floor. He also said he planned to replace the 12-foot refrigerated meat display inside the market.

At the time, Mr. Sethi expected that his business—which will continue to be called Quogue Country Market—could be open by Memorial Day weekend, or the Fourth of July at the latest.

That no longer appears to be possible as the building is still gutted as of earlier this week.

“Even though you go by sometimes and it doesn’t seem like there is a lot going on, they have been inside,” Mr. Sartorius said of the crews. “They are working on it.”

Mr. Sethi also owns the Grove Market in Cherry Grove on Fire Island and previously shared that the new Quogue Country Market will be set up in similar fashion and stock similar items, including organic and natural foods. The shop, he said at the time, would carry items similar to what one would find at a Whole Foods Market.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
