Who does the Town of Southampton answer to if not to the residents of the town, their constituents?

The town is now in ownership of Bel-Air Cove, which it purchased with town taxpayer dollars. According to your editorial [“Paying The Price,” Editorial, Opinion, June 13], despite all of the problems that this property was heir to, it had become the only home to many poor workforce people who had no other options.

So the town will sell the property to a private developer who plans to convert it to a private housing development of “full-market-value” condos. Don’t we have enough of those? As of my last count, most of the people who buy these kinds of units have the means to live in them only part-time or seasonally.

Can’t the Town of Southampton do better than that, knowing that dire need for affordable housing and eviction are both not being addressed?

Maybe the town thinks they’ve legally washed their hands of this problem, but I think that they need to be held accountable.
