Hamptons League of Women Voters Offer An Art Tour of Springs

Following up on previous tours it has offered of historic and arts sites in hamlets on the North and South Forks, on Thursday, May 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Hamptons League of Women Voters will offer an “Arts-Centric Tour of Springs.”

“We wanted to highlight the art-centric nature of Springs, the historic hamlet of fishermen and farmers that later became home to the two foremost American abstract expressionist painters—Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning—who drew so many other creatives to the area,” said a League spokesperson.

Tour-goers will drive and carpool in their own cars, and the tour begins with a buffet lunch at 11:30 a.m. at The Clubhouse at East Hampton Indoor Tennis (EHIT), 174 Daniel’s Hole Road. Stops on the tour include:

Leiber Collection museum, 446 Old Stone Highway, where director/curator Ann Fristoe Stewart will give a tour of the current exhibit “The Marriage of Two Minds Remembered,” which honors the memory of Judith Leiber with her fanciful handbags and Gerson Leiber with his paintings; Green River Cemetery, where East Hampton historian Hugh King will lead a tour of the final resting place of 47 artists including Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Elaine de Kooning, as well as many writers and local residents; The Springs Historic District, where lifelong Springs resident Deanna Tikkanen will talk about the Springs General Store, Ashawagh Hall, library, Blacksmith Shop, and Presbyterian Church; Maidstone Park, for afternoon refreshments, and enjoyment of a Springs beach; Duck Creek Farm Historic Site and John Little Barn, where director Jess Frost will talk about the formation of this historic site and distribute a handout on the free summer concerts, art exhibits and lectures there. At Duck Creek, tour-goers will see the art exhibit by Hiroyuki Hamada and be able to meet some present-day Springs artists, sculptors, writers and filmmakers.

The special events committee of the LWVH has organized the tour.
