The American Brass Quintet is no stranger to charting unfamiliar territory.
The ensemble—Kevin Cobb and Louis Hanzlik on trumpet, trombonist Michael Powell, Eric Reed on horn, and bass trombonist John D. Rojak—recently became the first brass group to ever win Chamber Music America’s highest honor, the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award for significant and lasting contributions to the field. It landed them not one, but two CMA magazine covers. And on Saturday night, the group will strike again, this time during the Quogue Chamber Music series as its inaugural taste of brass.
“ABQ has had a number of firsts in our history,” Mr. Rojak said in an email on Monday. “And we are very honored to take these giant leaps for brasskind.”
The program will feature two suites from the Renaissance, one from the 19th century and three contemporary pieces, he explained—from work that was far ahead of its time to Brazilian dances and a tour de force.
“Audiences should expect to be bathed in sonority and, perhaps, be surprised at how softly brass instruments play,” Mr. Rojak said, “to contrast with the visceral power one might expect. We think everyone will love it.”
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in Quogue Community Hall. Tickets are $40 and $5 for students, or $100 to attend the post-concert reception. For more information, call (631) 728-3407 or visit quoguechambermusic.com.
