Joan M. Callahan, a longtime Southampton resident, died at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on March 23, 2018. She was 95 and had enjoyed robust good health nearly her entire life.

Born on October 27, 1922, in the Bronx, to the Honorable Joseph M. Callahan and Elizabeth Madden Callahan, she was a graduate of the Academy of Mount St. Vincent and the College of Mount St. Vincent, both in Riverdale. She retired as special assistant to the Bronx County District Attorney and moved full time to Southampton in 1972. She worked in several Southampton Village retail stores including the Lilly Pulitzer shop and later as manager of the Shep Miller boys shop. She was active in the Southampton community and was, since 1953, a member of the Bathing Corporation of Southampton where she delighted in spending time with her large family.

She was predeceased by her parents and by her siblings, Alfred J., Eleanor R. Healey, Joseph M. Jr., Mary Elizabeth Ayers, William J., and Anne M. Healey. She was predeceased by her nieces, Patricia Ayers Brown and Frances Callahan Dalessandro; and her nephew, Alfred Callahan Jr. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Virginia Beck Callahan (Joseph Jr.) of Rye; and three generations of nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass took place on March 26 at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.

Southampton DWI Arrests for the Week of April 25

Michael Martin, 58, of Montclair, New Jersey, was arrested by Southampton Town Police on April 22 at 1:02 a.m. on Old Riverhead Road in Northampton and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor.
