Ann Sally Ullman Hirsch of Remsenburg died on June 15, 2017. She was 88 and died of natural causes.
Ms. Hirsch was a passionate musician and music educator. Over a career spanning more than 60 years, she touched the lives of many through music and was well known in the community for her extensive musical contributions, including founding the Eastern Suffolk School of Music in 1977. She served as its executive director for 10 years.
Ms. Hirsch loved playing music with others. As a pianist and violinist, she was an essential member of the Sound Symphony. One of her greatest gifts was as a private piano instructor to countless children and adults. She brought her love of music into the lives of hundreds of piano students.
She is survived by two daughters, Beth Galton and husband Fred Phelps, and Jean Galton and husband Ron Pellegrino. She is also survived by two stepchildren from her husband David Hirsch, Peter Hirsch and wife Heidi Garson, and Amanda Geffner and husband Michael Geffner; six granchildren, Ben Phelps, Nora and Claire Pellegrino, Emilie Hirsch, Joshua Geffner and Sophia Geffner; a sister, Mary Borkovitz and husband Peter and their three children, Barbara, Bill and Cara, as well as their spouses and children.
There will be a family funeral on Saturday, June 24, at the Remsenburg Cemetery, with a reception to follow at Ms. Hirsch’s home from 1 to 4 p.m. for family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Peconic Land Trust or the Sound Symphony Orchestra.
