Lawrence S. Ingolia, a longtime resident of Southampton and Scottsdale, Arizona, died on November 4. He was 97.
Born of Italian immigrants, Mr. Ingolia lived in Brooklyn during the Depression and graduated from St. John’s University School of Law. After serving in the Army during World War II, he became a practicing attorney and real estate developer. Identifying the need for affordable housing for returning soldiers, Mr. Ingolia built many small houses and commercial buildings in Nassau County, where he lived with his then wife, Kay, and two children. In the early 1960s he set his sights on the East End of Long Island, settling with his second wife, Anne, and family in Southampton. Here, he developed many subdivisions and with his sons built an apartment building, commercial projects and many homes. He also developed two subdivisions on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten.
Mr. Ingolia retired to Scottsdale with his third wife, Harriet, during the early 1990s. Recently, he moved back to Long Island to be closer to his children.
He was one of the founding board members of the Hampton Day School and was very active with fundraising for the school. He was a member of the Southampton Bath & Tennis Club. Survivors said he loved tennis, his weekly card night, traveling and baseball. He was a huge Yankees fan and never missed a game.
Mr. Ingolia is survived by his wife, Harriet; daughters, Patricia Harris and husband Randy of Michigan, Rebecca Gaynor and husband Christopher of Southampton, Elizabeth Bourne and husband Tristan of Los Angeles; and sons, Richard and wife Cathy of Florida; Lawrence and wife Tapp of Southampton; eight grandchildren, Laura, Bobby, Keri, Carla, Aidan, Ewan, George and Sam; and five great-grandchildren, Kellie, Brenna, Isabella, Jake and Keilah.
A memorial is planned for December 19.
