Marie Mahar Hammond of Westhampton Beach died on May 25, with her husband holding her hand. She was 90.
Ms. Hammond was born in Brooklyn to attorney William Joseph Mahar and registered nurse Marie Byrne Mahar.
Working as a registered nurse in New York while studying at the Art Students League, Ms. Hammond was discovered by a modeling agent. She went on to have an illustrious career as a fashion model with the Ford Modeling Agency and later as a photographer whose editorial work appeared in Glamour magazine.
In 1953 she married Bernard Clinton Hammond, an advertising executive, in Our Ladies Chapel in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan.
Ms. Hammond continued working in photography and painting throughout her life. Survivors said she was a devoted mother and grandmother and was admired not only for her beauty and fun-loving spirit, but also for her unending kindness to those in need.
Ms. Hammond is survived by her husband, B. Clinton Hammond; a daughter, Dore Hammond Normile of Bedford Corners; three grandchildren, Daniel Francis, Francesca Marie and Nora Ann Normile; a sister, Jean Mahar Walsh of Florida; and a brother, Robert Mahar of Millbrook. She was predeceased by a son, Bernard Clinton Hammond Jr., and a brother, William Mahar.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Quiogue on June 21 at 9 a.m. Follet and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach is handling the arrangements.
