This summer, I had the pleasure of enjoying my first full season as general manager of the Southampton Breakers for the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League — but I couldn’t have done it without the tremendous help from my committee and the support of the community.
Ron Kelly, who was the prior GM of the team, was a mentor to me and helped guide me along in my first year and continued to help with advertising and game-day setup. Declan Barbour, Leah Sellinger and Jen Zorko helped work the concessions stand. Cathy Daniels was a huge help with game-day setup/breakdown; she also continued to take amazing photos of the team, and her daughter Emma was the team’s scorekeeper.
Cathy and Emma have spent countless hours helping the team throughout the years but will be moving out of state this month, along with Cathy’s other daughter, Sarah, and we are sad to see them go.
Tom Anderson of Ted’s Market continued as the team’s long-standing announcer. Several local businesses donated game-day meals, raffle prizes and other donations. Molly Bishop and Dan McDonnell helped spread the word to our local Little League about housing players and the free Breakers clinics. A special thanks to Strong Oil and Clamman Seafood for donating ice all season.
Tase McCulley, our former housing coordinator, helped lead me down the right path with housing players. And where would we be without our host families? Without each and every one of you, there wouldn’t be a league, let alone a single team, and I thank you all for taking in the players you did this season.
Tony Stevens, Darren Phillips and the rest of the Southampton School District, I thank you for allowing us to use the varsity baseball field at Southampton High School, the new home of the Breakers!
A big thank you to manager Rob Cafiero and assistant coaches John and Chris Clark, not only for teaching the players the game but for taking great care of the field and for guiding me in my first season. And to the league’s sponsors, Hampton Jitney, Bridgehampton National Bank, and Dawn and Skip Norsic of Emil Norsic & Son. And, last but not least, I’d like to thank HCBL President Sandi Kruel for her help and guidance throughout the season, and I congratulate her on a successful first season as league president.
