When you change your clocks, change your batteries.
If you own a battery-operated smoke detector, it is recommended that you change the battery every time you change your clocks to or from daylight saving time. So, on Sunday, November 3, after you change your clocks, change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
It is also recommended that you test your smoke detectors monthly. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for testing the unit.
Big changes have been made regarding battery-operated smoke detectors. The New York State Division of Consumer Protection announced that as of April 1, 2019, all new or replacement smoke detectors offered for sale in New York State must either be powered by a sealed, non-removable battery with a minimum battery life of 10 years, or be hardwired to the building’s electricity.
This law does not affect your currently installed smoke detector. You may continue to use your current smoke detector, but it is highly recommended that you replace the detector with a new model before it reaches 10 years old.
