Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County’s Spring Gardening School is coming up on Saturday, April 25, and those who wish to attend are urged to register now to guarantee their spots.
The one-day gardening school at Riverhead Middle School runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with six time blocks for presentations and hands-on workshops.
New workshops on the schedule this year are on “mocktail” making and mushroom growing. Returning workshops will be on creating a new “victory garden,” installing drip irrigation, making butter and simple syrup, and creating bonsai.
New presentations will be on plant propagation, the Long Island Gold Medal Plant Award winners, food preservation, native homescaping, vermicomposting, tree and shrub care, beekeeping, growing Asian vegetables and herbs, designing herb gardens, and becoming a Master Gardener.
Among the sessions returning this year will be organic landscape maintenance, gardening in deer country, pollinator gardens, sustainable home gardens, gardening in small spaces, sensory gardens, rain gardens, figs, food security and “Tomatomania!”
The fee is $75 per person, or $70 before March 1, inclusive of sessions, a continental breakfast, box lunch, afternoon refreshments and door prizes. Preregistration is mandatory, and there are no refunds after April 1. Riverhead Middle School is located at 600 Harrison Avenue, Riverhead.
