Many people are getting sick, and so far about 2 percent of them are dying from the Coronavirus. Clearly, this is now a worldwide issue that requires serious leadership from the White House.
Alas, we are not getting anything of the sort.
Instead, Donald Trump held a press conference where he lied, he contradicted his health and science professionals, and he did happy talk to try to get the stock market to stop falling — and, of course, he crudely mocked Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.
His son, Don Jr., said that Democrats are hoping that millions of people will die from the Coronavirus, because that will hurt his father’s chance for reelection. This is a really sick comment, even by Trump standards.
Trump’s chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, says the press is covering the Coronavirus to hurt Trump’s chance for reelection. He suggested that they should instead cover Trump’s relationship with his son, Baron. (Melania has asked the press to give her son privacy and to leave him alone.)
On Tuesday, Trump’s top economic advisor, Larry Kudlow, said that the Coronavirus had been contained “pretty close to airtight” in the United States, and people should buy stocks, because they look cheap. Well, since last Tuesday, they have gotten a lot cheaper!
Trump and his cadre of sycophants are circling the wagons to protect their imperial president from truth, facts, reality and any accountability for anything that may hurt his chances for reelection.
And on Friday, Trump told his South Carolina rally attendees that the Coronavirus was a hoax perpetrated by the media and the Democrats …
In the meantime, the public interests have been relegated to second place at best.
This is all really sick.
