Ban Is Needed

Next Tuesday, March 24, the Southampton Town Board is set to approve legislation regulating what should happen when native grave sites are unearthed [“Southampton Town Unanimously Approves The Acquisition Of Shinnecock Hills Land Parcels For Preservation, 27east.com, February 26].” The board also will consider placing a temporary moratorium on building in part of the Shinnecock Hills, a once-pristine area where the Shinnecock ancestors buried their dead.

This comes as the town continues to issue variances that allow even more and denser build-out in the Hills.

Unless a moratorium is enacted and made permanent, we will not only lose a once-beautiful part of Long Island, we will be constantly dealing with graves desecration and funding the town’s purchase of the land.
