Very quietly, with little transparency, the U.S. Coast Guard is moving ahead with the auction of 28 housing units declared surplus at their housing site just north of Hampton West Estates, near Gabreski Airport. Information has been impossible to obtain, with Congressman Lee Zeldin’s office being the only source.
The addition of 28 residences potentially can have a catastrophic impact on the Hampton West Estates development. A major concern is price: Suppose all 28 units are sold to one individual, and the average price is below market — say, $200,000 each. That will put many new buyers at Hampton West underwater.
Does anyone care?
Supposedly, Suffolk County has approved, or is about to approve, whatever the Coast Guard is about to propose. Where is the public’s ability to comment?
This neighborhood has built itself up from the bad old days of absentee landlords and is now a thriving workforce housing community. Check the real estate reports — properties sell here.
Are we returning to the absentee landlord paradise?
