A Great Comfort

As principal of Our Lady of the Hamptons for so many years, I have seen many changes in the Village of Southampton. I write to you in the hope that I may share a very positive affirmation of something that has never changed: the quality and care of the Village Police.

Along with the local fire department, EMS and Ambulance Corps, the men and women of the Southampton Village Police Department have remained a constant in guarding the health and safety of residents and visitors alike. They are often, I believe, taken for granted and not applauded loudly enough!

With a school community that has burgeoned to 350 students, whose homes range from Yaphank to Montauk, Shelter Island to Hampton Bays (in addition to our core from Southampton, Sag Harbor and East Hampton), it is essential to know that a school on a main road across from the railroad station is so well protected. Parents as well as teachers feel secure in the knowledge that help in any emergency is just a few short minutes away.

The educational component of the DARE program, the fidelity of our crossing guard, Grace Rizzo, and the mentorship of Officers Lubold and McCulley further extend the positive contribution that uniformed officers offer. They are a presence and a great comfort for our faculty and students.

My gratitude for all that the Village Police are and do for us was underscored a few weeks ago when I read with pride of the heroism of the young Officer Matthew Stetler [“Southampton Village Police Officer Commended For Quick, Lifesaving Action,” 27east.com, January 26]. Matt was a student at OLH from preschool until graduation from eighth grade. His pride in wearing the blue uniform is so obvious as he seeks to serve. I am absolutely certain that this is the result of the seeds of good example and service that were planted by those officers so visible to him during his elementary school days, specifically Herman Lamison, Marla Donovan and Mike Ryan.

These last 11 months have been particularly difficult for everyone regardless of profession, status or personal needs. Let us not take for granted those men and women who are at our service and put their own safety and health at risk as they dutifully watch over and guide our children and the greater community!
