The Power Of Youth

My name is Jack Grzan. I am 11 years old and I chose to live in Sag Harbor. This is where I want to spend the rest of my life.

I am worried about what is happening to the town where I am growing up. It’s important for me to write this down.

Kids have a voice. We can make a different future — we live here now and we are the future. We want to grow up here, live here and have our families here.

Don’t take away our town, our memories.

Nonprofits don’t pay taxes. Who will pay the taxes to support the town we love? Raising taxes will force out the stores we love and the families we share our experiences with. What is Sag Harbor going to be? We don’t want a giant seaside mega-mall.

The next generation is our town of tomorrow. We’re not kids — we are your future. Please listen to us.

Children of today will be the next business owners. Will we be able to pay the rent in Sag Harbor? For what? A new theater?

We may not understand everything, but we try hard to make a difference. We feel very strongly, we have a bigger say than people think. We are human beings. We know and understand more than you think. We have to be concerned, because tomorrow is right around the corner. I know we are younger, but we feel shamed and powerless, and I think it’s time to use the power we have to save the town we love.

I hope this inspires other kids like me to share their thoughts.
