Voting Status

Southampton Village elections are here, and everyone who is legally entitled to vote and registered should do so.

Those who are not full-time residents of the village should be sure of their ability to register and vote, as their status could expose them — perhaps unwittingly — to violations of New York State law. Those who have tax residency outside of New York State could also jeopardize their tax residency status, as voter registration may be considered in determining that residency.

If your primary home is in New York City, Florida or elsewhere outside of Southampton Village, you may wish to consult with an election or tax attorney to be sure that your registration and any ballot you submit (in person or absentee) does not put you at risk of unintended legal or tax consequences.

If you have illegitimately registered and plan to vote or have requested an absentee ballot, you may minimize or possibly eliminate any legal or tax liability by not voting or not submitting your absentee ballot.
