Southampton Elementary School students celebrated Flag Day on June 14 with several flag-related activities.  All students participated in a story book walk that focused on the history of the American flag. The activity was followed by a singalong in which kindergartners led the entire school in patriotic songs in English and Spanish. Hampton Bays Elementary School third grade students participated in an educational and engaging

Hampton Bays Elementary School third grade students participated in an educational and engaging "Animal Olympics Day" on June 10. As part of the event, educators from the Center for Environmental Education and Discovery spoke to students about animal adaptations and introduced them to several small critters. The educators then facilitated a series of outdoor games where students mimicked various animals to complete physical challenges. The students jumped like frogs, ran like cheetahs, hunted for moths like bats and found new shells like crabs. COURTESTY HAMPTON BAYS SCHOOL DISTRICT

Third grade students, including Mary Kate Breen, at Westhampton Beach Elementary School were recently introduced to two friendly llamas from the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center. Before giving the students an opportunity to walk the llamas around the school’s grounds, educators from the center spoke to them about llama habitats, behavior and usefulness. East Quogue School held its annual Flag Day ceremony on June 14. Students sing patriotic songs, the East Quogue School Marching Band plays, and students are asked to invite family members who have served in the military for a special ceremony honoring them for their service. Students also wrote short essays about what the flag means to them. This year’s essay winners were second-grader Faith Taylor, left, and fifth-grader Genesis Jenkins, center.
