There are those who believe that it is bad precedent to indict a former president, or for that matter a sitting president, for criminal conduct. However, we have now seen that a precedent has been set by a sitting president — Donald Trump — to break the law. Repeatedly. He certainly did so in order to stay in power after the 2020 election and again surrounding the January 6 insurrection.
So if that precedent has been set, isn’t it important that the precedent of “no one is above the law” be set?
Additionally, Steve Bannon and other Trump supporters are attempting to set the precedent that refusing to testify when subpoenaed by Congress is okay. Defiantly so. If Bannon, et al., are not convicted and given the maximum sentence for such acts, are we essentially saying that the precedent they have set is okay?
I think that we are all on a slippery slope in determining what is really acceptable to us as Americans and what is necessary for the protection of our democracy. Lots of what has happened over the last 10 years has been unprecedented. So we all have to decide which precedents we support, and who or what are we going to ignore.
Because behavior — all behavior, including that of inaction — has consequences.
