Cheryl Lee (Collins) Behringer of Southampton died suddenly in Charleston, South Carolina, on March 19 from an aortic aneurysm. She was 60.

She was born on March 22, 1962, in East Hampton. Raised in East Hampton, she graduated high school with a certificate in commercial art.

She met her husband, Michael, in 1979 and they married on June 4, 1983, and settled in North Sea. Together they raised two children, Michael and Steven.

Behringer worked part-time as an assistant teacher in the Children’s School for over 30 years. She was an excellent artist and loved being around children, her family said.

She also loved jewelry, which can be attested by anyone who knew her, her family said. She was an excellent cook and was known for her ability to host large family dinners during the holidays.

She also enjoyed going to spin classes and the friendships that they produced. The family enjoyed many camping trips to the Virgin Islands and Tortola, as well as towing their camper to the ocean for over 25 years. Late night bonfires were a specialty.

Her life was dedicated to taking care of her family, they said. She adored her children and truly loved watching them grow into productive adults.

She and her husband retired in 2019 and enjoyed traveling and spending the winters in Charleston. Her friends and family could rely on her to be a good listener and a woman of her word, her family said. She left this world unexpectedly and will be forever missed and remembered, they said.

She is survived by her husband, Michael; and their son Steven, and his wife Samantha. She was predeceased by her son Michael, whose wife, Brynne and their three children, Charlie, Will and Savannah survive him. She is also survived by her brother, Edward; her sister, Peri both of Florida; and her step-mother, Nancy Collins of East Hampton; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents John and Pamela Collins; as well as her step-sister Kelly Mattmuller.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 31, from 4-7 p.m., with a memorial service on Saturday, April 1, at 2:30 p.m. at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Behringer Education Fund with checks made out to Charles Schwab & Co & sent to David Vaughan Investments LLC, 5823 North Forrest Park Drive, Peoria, Illinois 61614-3500. Note in the memo line: “The Behringer Education Fund.”

Under Siege

Our Sag Harbor park tennis courts are under siege. There are eight clay courts and two hard courts. Information was just given at the start of the season that the hard courts will be given over to pickleball, as they were last season, but will be resurfaced and used only for pickleball — not to be shared for tennis, also. Two of the now eight clay courts, on the upper level, are to be paved this summer, I was told, so that the high school teams can use hard courts for practice in fall and spring. Not the Best Day

So, the person who concocted the recent traffic experiment says it was “the best day yet” [“After Southampton Traffic Experiment Victory Lap, Talk Turns to Long-Term Possibilities,” 27east.com, May 7]. Obviously he didn’t drive anywhere between 3 and 7 p.m. those two weeks. We live off South Magee Street and could not go west at 4 p.m., because there were no left turns on County Road 39 from South Magee, nor could we turn right onto Hill Street. We had to drive the back roads to get to the intersection of North Sea Road and County Road 39, which was ... by Staff Writer

Miracle Space-Age Fabrics of the 1980s

I fractured my patella in March. I was skiing in Colorado. As I stood up from the chairlift, the top of my kneecap broke away. Crazy, right? We couldn’t figure out how it happened. One doctor thought my thigh muscles were so strong, they pulled the bone apart. Those millions of squats I’ve done in the past must have given me the quadriceps of 10 men. But can the quadriceps of 10 men break a bone? If so, are they strong enough to lift a car? Lifting a car would be bad-expletive. Since it happened at the top of the ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Going Nuclear
