Judy Rana of Sag Harbor died peacefully on March 7, with her daughter, Debbie, at her side. She was 83.

The daughter of Arthur and Helene (Bassett) Ross, she grew up in East Hampton, and was a lifelong resident of Sag Harbor. She spent her most recent years living in Vermont with her daughter Debbie and her son-in-law Michael Tagliavia, and grand-dog Jack.

She was a supportive, kind, and hardworking mother, her family said. Before retirement, she worked at Sag Harbor Industries as a line supervisor. There, she formed many lifelong friendships.

You could always find her sitting quietly, either doing crossword puzzles or reading. She loved books, especially old books. She just enjoyed the feel and smell of an old hard cover library book in her hands, her family said. Her main reading interests included American history, Native American history and anthropology. She also loved local history and spent many years searching local “secret spots” for arrowheads, old bottles and relics with her very dear lifelong friend Dot Zaykowski. Together, they also enjoyed participating in various anthropological digs.

She is survived by her son Ralph (Chip) Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Riverhead; her daughter Debbie Tagliavia and her husband, Michael, of Corinth, Vermont; and her son Michael of Sag Harbor. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Rana, who died at the young age of 46.

Per her wishes, there will be no services. Her family ask that those who knew her remember her in their own way.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local library, which would mean the world to her.

Arrangements are by Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. For a memorial guestbook, visit hookerwhitcomb.com.

Skip the Stuff

When it comes to changing the world, some things are easier to do than others. The region has done some sweeping things with an eye toward the environment. After a few false starts, Southampton Town and East Hampton Town helped lead the way with a ban on plastic grocery bags, which eventually spread to Suffolk County, and, in 2020, to all of New York State. For a while, the idea that people might stop relying on free plastic bags and — horrors! — bring their own reusable bags to the grocery store seemed unreasonably ambitious. Today, it’s an afterthought for ... by Editorial Board

We’re Waiting

The eight stations on the Montauk Branch between Speonk and Montauk generally, on a weekday, will see 10 trains stop throughout a 24-hour period. The problem: Only half are between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., presumably when most people might actually use the train to ride from local stop to local stop. The South Fork Commuter Connection went a long way toward improving the usefulness of the LIRR for a daily commute, making sure there were reasonable morning and afternoon options for east-west commuters, and adding in shuttle buses to get workers from the buses to their ... by Editorial Board
