Read (Christopher) Vail of Sag Harbor died peacefully surrounded by family on February 22. He was 78.

He was born on August 31, 1945, to Jane and Richard Vail, and grew up in Westhampton Beach. After meeting his wife, Susan, they settled in Sag Harbor.

Read, as he was known to his friends and family, was a captain in the Westhampton Beach Fire Department and a coach with Westhampton Beach PAL, a semi-pro bowler, avid softball player and most of all golfer. He and his wife spent many years traveling the globe. He had an adventurous love for life, his family said. He lived on the East End of Long Island his entire life. He was dedicated to the Sag Harbor Golf Club, St. Andrews Catholic Church and helping his many family and friends.

He worked for the Suffolk County executive’s office and Public Works Department as a budget officer for over 35 years.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan Vail (Rozzi) of Wainscott; sister-in-law Darlene A. Rozzi of Wainscott; brother-in-law Dennis Rozzi and his wife Misook of Chandler, Arizona; and his nephews Edward Rozzi and his wife Yuliya of South Korea and Thomas Rozzi of Japan; great-nieces and great-nephews Michael, Leona, Emma, Elena; and his godson, Dennis.

Visitation took place on February 28 at Yardley Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. Funeral services were held on February 29 at St. Andrew’s Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Andrew’s Church (standrewchurchsagharborny.org) or the Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry (sagharborfoodpantry.org).

She was able to access her apartment, but when she did, she told police, the rest of her possessions were also boxed up and furniture had been removed ... 8 May 2024 by Staff Writer

Skip the Stuff

When it comes to changing the world, some things are easier to do than others. The region has done some sweeping things with an eye toward the environment. After a few false starts, Southampton Town and East Hampton Town helped lead the way with a ban on plastic grocery bags, which eventually spread to Suffolk County, and, in 2020, to all of New York State. For a while, the idea that people might stop relying on free plastic bags and — horrors! — bring their own reusable bags to the grocery store seemed unreasonably ambitious. Today, it’s an afterthought for ... by Editorial Board

We’re Waiting

The eight stations on the Montauk Branch between Speonk and Montauk generally, on a weekday, will see 10 trains stop throughout a 24-hour period. The problem: Only half are between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., presumably when most people might actually use the train to ride from local stop to local stop. The South Fork Commuter Connection went a long way toward improving the usefulness of the LIRR for a daily commute, making sure there were reasonable morning and afternoon options for east-west commuters, and adding in shuttle buses to get workers from the buses to their ... by Editorial Board
