LTV Studios and the East End Underground Live Concert Series will present an encore concert staging of “The Free Life,” a rock opera by Dan Koontz, on Saturday, September 21, at 7 p.m.

On September 20, 1970, hundreds of well-wishers gathered in a field in Springs to witness Malcolm Brighton, Rodney Anderson and Pamela Brown take off in The Free Life in their ill-fated attempt to be the first balloonists to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It was not to be. Some 32 hours later, the giant hot air balloon went down in a storm off the coast of Newfoundland. The Free Life and its youthful crew were never found. This project was inspired by that historical event.

Dan Koontz is a Sag Harbor-based songwriter and performer. In addition to his songs for “The Free Life,” Koontz has recorded original country-tinged songs with his family band Edan’s Kin and R&B-style songs with The Hoodoo Loungers. He sings and plays with both of these bands and several others on the East End. A producer as well as a songwriter and performer, Koontz is currently finishing up the recording of “The Free Life” with the help of Mick Hargreaves at Lantern Sound, and plans to release the record in the fall.

Tickets are $25 in advance ($30 at the door) at ltveh.org. LTV Studios is at 75 Industrial Road in Wainscott. For more information, call 631-537-2777.
