“Paton Miller: Around the World in 40 Paintings, Part II” is being held over at Oscar Molina Gallery in Southampton and is now extended through Sunday, January 22. The gallery will host a closing reception with the artist from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 21.
The artwork on view represents a distinctive domain as portrayed through Paton Miller’s fanciful lens and his precise hand, which expressively depicts people, animals and places, both real and imagined. These wondrous and whimsical works convey emotions and situations that engage the viewer in unknown, sometimes absurd, yet somehow familiar territories.
Paintings and mixed media works are displayed, among them “Cat out of House,” an oil on canvas work that combines Miller’s facility for color, line and form with his acuity and ability to generate a fantastic story. Anthropomorphism abounds in Miller’s work, as in the canvas “Read All About It” and contributes to the enchanting quality of his art. While many pieces strike a balance between fantasy and reality, “Isa” is an undemanding, intimate composition of a seated girl that simply transmits stillness and introspection in Miller’s signature jewel tones and scratched, worn textures. Uniquely fabricated in part from apiary materials, a collection of small works — a manner of art chests to be rifled through — continue to delight the public with their uniquely devised presentation and intriguing subject matter.
Coming up next at the gallery will be “Manifest: Works by Demarcus McGaughey and Uncutt” on view beginning January 27. Oscar Molina Gallery is at 28c Jobs Lane, Southampton. For information, visit oscarmolinagallery.com.
