Bay Street Theatre will present its fall production of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451,” directed by Bay Street co-founder Stephen Hamilton, with scenic design by award-nominated artist Mike Billings. Performances will run from November 13 through November 30.
Bradbury’s 1953 dystopian classic imagines a future where books are banned and firemen are tasked with burning them. The story follows Guy Montag, a fireman who begins to question his role in a society defined by censorship, mass media distraction and fear. His doubts ignite a rebellion as he dares to envision a world where knowledge and free thought can endure.
“‘Fahrenheit 451’ is more than a story about firemen who burn books,” said Bay Street Theater Artistic Director Scott Schwartz. “It is a cautionary tale about censorship, complacency and the fragility of free expression — questions that remain profoundly relevant in our times. We are thrilled to share this work with the community.”
Guiding the production is Hamilton, an acclaimed director, actor and educator whose decades-long career includes shaping the cultural landscape of the East End through numerous productions. His approach to “Fahrenheit 451” brings Bradbury’s themes into sharp contemporary focus.
Billings, a nationally recognized scenic designer, has worked with theater companies across the country, including Berkshire Theatre Group, Rubicon Theatre Company and Geva Theatre Center. His designs, known for their imagination and precision, will transform the Bay Street stage into Bradbury’s haunting futuristic world.
