Shelter Island Friends of Music will conclude its 2025 concert season with a performance by the internationally acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet on Sunday, October 12, at 6 p.m. at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church. Admission is free; donations are appreciated. A reception with the artists will follow the performance.

The program will include works by Joseph Haydn, Vijay Iyer and Antonín Dvořák.

Recognized for more than 25 years as one of the leading chamber ensembles in the world, the Borromeo String Quartet has earned accolades for its innovative approach and dynamic artistry. The Boston Globe praised the group for its “edge-of-the-seat performances … simply the best.”

The ensemble’s honors include the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Cleveland Quartet Award, and Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award. The quartet has performed in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall in London, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.

The Borromeo is also known for its work with prominent composers such as John Cage, Steve Reich, Osvaldo Golijov, and Jennifer Higdon, and for its commitment to both classical and contemporary repertoire.

As Ensemble-in-Residence at institutions including the New England Conservatory, the Taos School of Music, and the Heifetz International Music Institute, the quartet has pioneered the use of laptop computers on stage, reading from composers’ original manuscripts. This approach offers audiences a rare window into the creative process and adds a fresh dimension to the concert experience.

“Our concert with the Borromeo String Quartet is a fitting conclusion to what has been an extraordinary season,” said Richard Weinhart, artistic director of Shelter Island Friends of Music. “From world-class soloists to dynamic ensembles, each performance has brought something unique and unforgettable to our community. We are deeply grateful to the artists and our supporters who make it possible to bring such inspiring music to Shelter Island year after year.”

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome and help support future performances. Shelter Island Presbyterian Church is at 32 North Ferry Road on Shelter Island. For more information, visit sifriendsofmusic.org.
