The Choral Society of the Hamptons will present “For Lo, The Winter Is Past—A Spring Concert,” a joyful celebration of spring’s arrival after a long Hamptons winter, at the East Hampton Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 21, at 3 p.m.
The show will include four choral pieces that span two and a half centuries, creating a varied program to welcome the new season. First up will be Daniel Pinkham’s “Wedding Cantata,” composed in 1959 as a choral setting of the poetic verses of the “Song of Solomon.” Concert organizers for the Choral Society have characterized this piece as not only a tribute to spring, but a tender and moving love song that beautifully captures the essence of the Biblical verses.
The second piece in Sunday’s concert will be “Magnificat in D Major,” a complex work full of rhythmic and harmonic surprises, by Jan Dismas Zelenka, a prominent Baroque composer. The Choral Society singers will also perform Mozart’s “Missa Brevis in D,” a compact, six-part setting of the mass that, in true Mozart fashion, sparkles with vivid and intricate contrapuntal passages.
The fourth piece on the schedule for Sunday’s concert will be G.F. Handel’s “As Longs The Hart For Flowing Streams,” a beautiful evocation of Psalm 42.
The concert will be presented under the baton of guest conductor Walter Klauss. Featured soloists for the performance will be Nonie Schuster-Donato (soprano), Barbara Fusco (mezzo soprano), Martin Doner (tenor) and Adam Alexander (bass).
Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for youths, and may be purchased on the society’s website, www.ChoralSocietyoftheHamptons.org; at the Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor; or by calling 204-9402.
