Before reality TV cornered the market, weekday soap operas provided the melodrama we loved to love and loved to hate. That very topic is explored in "Soapdish," which slips onto the screen at Pierson High School at 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, as the next installment in the Sag Harbor Cinema's Really Funny comedy film series, 10 comedic films chosen by director John Landis. A conversation with the director, Michael Hoffman, will follow the screening.
Starring Sally Field and Kevin Kline and released in 1991, "Soapdish" revolves around two actors whose past indiscretions seep into their real and fictional lives, as well as the plotline of “The Sun Also Sets,” the popular daytime drama in which they both star. The movie — which John Landis called “a classic farce ... with a great cast and hysterical observations” — also features Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr., Teri Hatcher, Cathy Moriarty, Elizabeth Shue, Carrie Fisher, Kathy Najimy, Garry Marshall and Ben Stein.
The post-screening conversation will be moderated by Susan Lacy, director of the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center board. Tickets cost $10 online and at the door.
