For the 12th season of the Parrish Art Museum’s offsite exhibition series Parrish Road Show, East Hampton-based artist Hiroyuki Hamada is creating a site-specific outdoor sculptural installation at the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton.

Opening on Saturday, September 9, with a free public reception, “Matter on Ground” will feature three new or repurposed large-scale sculptures. Hamada, who often uses atypical materials such as enamel, tar, wax, burlap, plastic and pigmented resin to create gentle, smooth sculptural forms, will push the boundaries of his materials for the outdoor works.

The exhibition continues the artist’s exploration of the parallels between nature and art. In his first venture creating work for the outdoors, Hamada is diving deeper into this exploration with “the sky as a ceiling and the ground as a floor. How does the work interact with the natural light, with the wind, the rain, the smell of soil and plants, the presence of animals, or under the moonlight?”

Hiroyuki Hamada (Japanese, born 1968) has exhibited at Gana Art Bowang in Seoul, South Korea, The Arts Center at Duck Creek and Guild Hall in East Hampton and many other galleries, including OK Harris Works of Art in New York City, where he began his solo exhibition career with wall hanging sculptures. Hamada has been the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant and twice received New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships in sculpture. In 2018, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, and in 2020, was named recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Mid-Career Residency at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. Hamada lives and works in Springs.

Organized by Kaitlin Halloran, assistant curator and publications coordinator, and Brianna Hernández, assistant curator, under supervision of Corinne Erni, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education, and in collaboration with the South Fork Natural History Museum, “Matter on Ground” is on view daily from September 9 to October 10. A free, public reception will take place outdoors at the South Fork Natural History Museum on Saturday, September 9, from 3 to 5 p.m., with rain date Sunday, September 10.

South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center is at 377 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike, Bridgehampton. In addition, on Friday, September 29, at 6 p.m., Hiroyuki Hamada will take part in an Artist Talk at Parrish Art Museum with Corinne Erni. Parrish Art Museum is at 279 Montauk Highway, Water Mill.
