The Church in Sag Harbor presents a performance by multi-award-winning Mozambican musician Albino Mbie on Thursday, July 11, at 6 p.m. Mbie returns to The Church for an evening of sound, story and inspiration. Listen and learn from the man who built his first guitar from a 5-liter can of oil, scrap wood and strings made out of electrical cords.
The musician, who doubles as a professor of music at Berklee College of Music, is fueled by resourcefulness, intrigued by the fusion of elements and inspired by his multicultural experience, all of which he integrates into his music providing audiences with a rich sound full of diversity and grounded in experience.
Mbie is a guitarist, singer, composer, sound engineer and music producer. He was born in Kamukwane District and moved to the United States to attend Berklee in 2009, being among the first Africans awarded a full tuition scholarship via the Berklee African Scholars Program. In 2013, he graduated with a dual major in music production and sound engineering and guitar performance and minors in acoustics and electronics. Since then, he has shared his Mozambican roots — music, dance, culture and native languages enriched by the experience of living and studying in the United States with the rest of the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Marrabenta, Nikatche, Afro-Pop and Moz-Jazz sound.
Tickets are $30 ($25 for members, $15 for ages 18 and under) and can be purchased at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street, Sag Harbor.
