Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s “My Fair Lady,” the musical about phoneticist Henry Higgins and Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle, will begin previews at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor on Tuesday, August 2.

Based on playwright George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” and Gabriel Pascal’s 1938 film adaptation, this 1957 Tony Award winner for Best Musical was itself adapted for a 1964 film starring Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn.

Michael Arden, who was Tony nominated for the Broadway revival of “Spring Awakening,” directs this Bay Street production. Kelli Barrett, whose credits include “Rock of Ages,” “Wicked” and “Doctor Zhivago,” stars as Eliza Doolittle opposite Paul Alexander Nolan as Henry Higgins. Mr. Nolan’s Broadway credits include lead roles in “Once,” “Jesus Christ Superstar” and, most recently, “Bright Star.” He replaces previously announced actor Douglas Hodge, who withdrew due to scheduling conflicts, according to Bay Street.

The first preview night will be a pay-what-you-can show. The official opening night will be Saturday, August 6, and the production will continue through August 28. Showtimes are Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m., Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m. Starting August 10, there will be 2 p.m. matinées on Wednesdays and Sundays. For tickets, ranging from $25 to $125, visit baystreet.org or call 631-725-9500.
