As part of its Kidsummer performing arts series, the Parrish Art Museum on Jobs Lane in Southampton will present the Seventh Principle Performance Company in “Steppin’ Out” on Wednesday, July 28, at 2 p.m.
A contemporary African dance company founded in 1992, the Seventh Principle Performance Company combines body percussion, foot-stomping rhythms and step dance moves from the streets of America and South Africa.
Drill team, stepping, marching band, and fraternity/sorority dance teams use “stepping” as a means of expression. This unique dance form, which stems from African-American traditions, has quickly become a part of American culture.
The audience will learn about polyrhythm, improvisation, basic music vocabulary, and history in this hands-on, interactive learning experience.
The museum’s programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts. A portion of family programs are made possible with the support of H. Peter Haveles and the Town of Southampton.
Tickets are $10, or $5 for Parrish members. For more information, call 283-2118, ext. 30.
