“The Ark” — The Church’s summer exhibition — is about to dock, and to celebrate the closing weekend, The Church will host the fourth installment of The Power of Poetry, a community-driven poetry read-in.

“The Power of Poetry” is a recurring program at The Church that brings people together to celebrate poetry, the beauty of words and the power of capturing the human experience through a community-driven poetry read-in. Each “verse” (event) features a curated selection of poetry tied together by a common theme. Previous verses include “Verse 1 – The Sag Harbor Saints,” “Verse 2 – An Ode to Some Odes,” and “Verse 3 – I’m With the Banned.”

Gathering in the library, participants will weave through a curated selection of poems that relate to The Ark as they explore man’s relationship to animals and nature and examine archetypal imagery of the flood, the raven, the dove and the rainbow.

The poems are curated in advance, and readers are assigned their reading order upon arrival. Poems are not preselected, rehearsed or memorized but are actively engaged with as the reader steps up to the mic. People interested in reading, should purchase a ticket first.

“The Power of Poetry Verse 4: Go Forth and Multiply,” will be on Sunday, August 31, at 2 p.m. at The Church, 48 Madison Street, Sag Harbor. Tickets are $10 (free for members). Space is limited. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit thechurchsagharbor.org.
