Ma’s House, the new artist residency on the Shinnecock Territory is currently featuring “Time Cloud,” a solo exhibition of new works created by July and August resident artist Yanyan Huang. The show opened with a reception on August 7 and will remain on view at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio, 159 Old Point Road (follow yellow signs) in Southampton, through August 26.

Huang’s exhibition features new watercolor works blending elements of Shinnecock origin mythology interwoven with personal creation myths. Yanyan Huang was born in Sichuan, China, and having lived in California, New York, Florence, and Beijing, is a multicultural artist who incorporates elements from far-reaching and contrasting eras of cultural influences.

Her practice embodies different sets of structures and self-mythologies that undergo daily negotiations of habits and rituals. Her episodic travels to historical-artistic and cultural centers around the world present a research-based artistic pilgrimage in the manner of spiritual devotees of old. During these trips, she retrieves time-bound mythologies and encounters opportunities for cultural exchange, which are then interwoven within the practice itself.

Her background in classical music and dance informs the gestural, rhythmic style of her paintings. Sensuous and poetic, these labyrinthian explosions of color stem from outpourings of spontaneous emotion, illustrating journeys into inner psychic landscapes.

For “Time Cloud,” Huang spent two weeks at Ma’s House studio, drawing upon influences of Shinnecock origin myths to create a body of work that illustrates fields of overlapping psychological and physical boundaries within the specific context of Shinnecock ancestral tribal land.

Gallery hours are weekends 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. by appointment. The exhibition can also be visited other times by appointment after 5 p.m. For additional information or to schedule a visit, contact Ma’s House founder and artist Jeremy Dennis at 631-566-0486.
