The third annual Young American Writers Project (YAWP) High School Playwrights Festival will be held at Stony Brook Southampton on Saturday, December 10, at 7 p.m. at the Avram Theater.
Sponsored by MFA in Creative Writing and Literature Program, the festival will include 10 short plays written and performed by high school students. Participating schools include Bridgehampton, Pierson, Southampton, Eastport South Manor, Ross School, Shelter Island, Westhampton Beach and the Foreign Language Academy of Global Studies in the Bronx.
The festival represents the collaboration between student playwrights, actors and designers who have been taught and mentored by theater and writing professionals affiliated with Stony Brook Southampton’s MFA in Creative Writing and Literature, which created and sponsors the YAWP programs. Professional directors stage the plays, which encompass a wide array of genres—from comedies to dramas—with subject matter drawn from the students’ own lives.
The Young American Writers Project is helmed by Executive Director Emma Walton Hamilton and Program Director Will Chandler.
Admission to the performances on Saturday is free but reservations are suggested. For reservations and additional information, email william.chandler@stonybrook.edu.
