Alex Werner of Sag Harbor dies April 9 at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital of complications of CLL. He was 55.

Born ion New York City, Mr. Werner attended St. Andrews, Pierson High School and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Connecticut College.

He worked for many years as a baker, before switching careers to work with animals at the Southampton Town Animal Shelter.

Mr. Werner’s kind and generous nature, family members said, earned him many friends, all of whom were extremely important to him.

He was deeply entrenched in the local fishing community and spent many of his happiest days fishing with his friends on the bays and beaches of Long Island, according to his family.

He married Maria Silvestre in 2006. They spent much of their free time traveling throughout Europe and Asia.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Werner is survived by his mother Eliza Gill Werner; father Frederick Paxton Werner; brother Oliver Gill Werner; stepson Justin Isana; nephews Henry and James Werner; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial is planned for a future date.
