Betty N. Cook
Former Southampton resident Betty N. Cook died on September 14 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. She was 95.
Ms. Cook was born on October 24, 1916, in Southampton to Dr. John and Marie Nugent. She attended Southampton High School and Wells College, graduating with honors in 1938. She married Floyd K. Diefendorf Jr. in 1941 and lived in Westerly, Rhode Island, during her husband’s service as a naval aviator. They had two sons, Floyd III (Corky) and Peter. After the war, they lived in Stauton, New Jersey, and Hampton Bays. In 1954, after a divorce, she and her children moved back to Southampton where she met and married Edward F. Cook of East Hampton. They moved to East Hampton where she lived until 2002, raising her two children and Edward’s two daughters, Sally and Cynthia. Mr. Cook died in 1984.
Ms. Cook was a member of the Ladies Village Improvement Society, the Ramblers, the South Fork County Club, the First Presbyterian Church and the American Association of University Women.
She moved to Peconic Landing in Greenport in 2002 and enjoyed her reunions with many friends from the past.
Ms. Cook is survived by her two sons, Floyd III of Shelter Island and Peter of North Carolina; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Bognolo of New Hampshire and Sally Perra of Italy; nine granddaughters, Lisa Beebe, Samantha Alviti, Megan Dinwoodie, Jennifer Dominick, Meredith Hinz, Anna Bognolo, Kathryn Valentine, Marianna Perra and Giovanna Perra; and 17 great-grandchildren, Patrick, Conner and Megan Dominick; Madison and Samuel Beebe; Jack and Ryan Alviti; Anna and Julia Hinz; Benjamin and Emma Dinwoodie; Vittoria, Isabella and Eric Valentine; Claudia and Max Rajballie; and Allegra Arragusto.
